What the website says…
An independent steam powered microbrewery…Our passion is to produce innovative, distinctive and flavoursome real ales using the finest quality ingredients and traditional craft skills.
Our take on the brewery…
Langham Brewery feel like a comfortable part of the Sussex Brewery furniture, like they’ve always just been there filling the cask pumps of traditional bars across Brighton, Hove and wider Sussex. The branding is safe and recogniseable, they don’t seem to crave the limelight but diligently do what they do very well.
Langham are artisans in their own right, and while for many brewing traditional, CAMRA celebrated ‘cask-conditioned’ ale is just not practical for a modern market, Langham will only deliver kegs to pubs they know understand how to manage cask conditioned ‘real-ale’.
Many cask drinkers will recognise well established ales such as Hip-Hop and Arapaho, but for craft beer drinkers they may be a new name, given that they only recently expanded into keg products. That said they are nailing it with a great tasting and varied range.
A bit of history…
Head Brewer James Langham began as a hobby brewer in his teens and later started the brewery with a friend in a rural barn near Lodsworth, West Sussex.
Beers have been brewed there since 2005 and it’s now husband and wife team, James and Lesley, who lead a team of 7 (if you include Alfie teh brewery dog) that deliver a massive range of real ales, seasonals and more recently a range of keg beers, incuding fruity pales, a lager and a stout.
How local are they?
Langham are based just south of the village of Lodsworth in West Sussex, a scenic, rural location in the heart of the Sussex Downs. If you find yourself up that way, they open for collections and takeaway from the brewery.
Our favourites 🍺
We’ve sampled a decent number of the range and instantly fell in love with the LSD, otherwise known as the Langham Special Draft.
At 5.2% it’s not as mind bending as it might sound, but is incredibly drinkable. It’s a gorgeous, thick, full bodied and bready beer. Dark yet sweet with malt, fruit cake and plum flavours. Slight carbonation and a crisp finish actually make this a more refreshing beer than you might at first expect.
Hip-Hop is another cracker and at 4% it’s a reliable and drinkable session pale. It starts crisp and lively with hops which then mellow to a slightly bitter finish which slides down easy.
