16-17 Kings Rd,

Star & Garter Brighton dates back to 1750 and recently reverted back to it’s original name after a very long stint as Dr Brighton’s.

famous guests of this former Hotel apparently include Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin and even King Edward VIII.

With your back to the sea you enter Star & Garter Brighton into a comfortably wide and long open-plan space. The feel is relaxing with soft colours, wooden furniture and a brick fireplace on the left wall.

Seating in this front section includes 2 very comfortable leather banquettes in each bay window, a scattering of low tables and a bar against the right wall.

The serving bar is halfway through the pub and it’s solid brass top is a classy traditional touch amongst all the wood features.

Beyond the bar the pub becomes a touch duskier and the seating hides in intimate booths. There are lots of options for groups throughout and all seating looks very comfortable.

The 250+ year old building went through an incredibly painstaking refurbishment during COVID and you can really see that money has been spent well. The design is clever and modern, makes great use of the space and doesn’t try too hard.

There’s a good combination of mainstream brands and legitimate craft beer here across 12 taps, it’s all on keg though, nothing on cask.

The team behind the Star & Garter Brighton also run The Pond and The Easy Tiger, so they have excellent local and national connections.

There’s often some local brewery options and if not you’ll find something decent from one of the UK’s prominent breweries.

Guinness (not extra cold) is also available and scored very highly in my 2023 search for Brighton’s Best Guinness.

At time of writing Happy Hour runs Mon-Thursday 4-8pm and covers pints of Pravha, Aspall, House Wine and 3-4-2 shots.

The food offering at Star & Garter Brighton is Cutie Pies Detroit Pizza and quite simply, OMG! Cutie Pies is a spongy deep-pan focaccia style bread topped with wonderfully satisfying pizza toppings. I couldn’t stop eating this, it’s the perfect beer food.

Alongside the 5 pizza options are fries, wings and dough ball options.

I wouldn’t call the Star & Garter a sports pub but they show sport of all sorts, from F1 to footy on a screen in the front section of the pub.

Music quizzes are held every Wednesday by MC Cashback.

The Star & Garter Brighton feels modern and relaxed. The beer options are good if you’re a fan of keg.

The keg beer focus and trendy food menu suggests this pub is aimed at the younger market as well as tourists cruising along King’s Road.
